A FLOOR, SOME THOUGHTS AND US

A Floor, Some Thoughts and Us is a full-length dance theatre work - commissioned by Footnote New Zealand Dance for the 2021 ChoreoCo. Season. Premiering in the New Zealand Fringe Festival - Circa Theatre.

A homage to films that are set in one location, A Floor, Some Thoughts, and Us, sees five characters attempt to communicate with a mysterious entity.

“I can hear something. Smell something. I know what it is, at least vaguely. I think I can solve this. This feeling, this want, this desire. To move, to feel, to be felt. To touch you, be with you, be you. Are you me? Am I you? Are we the same? Since when? Where has it gone? I’m sure it’s here somewhere. It needs to be seen. I want to be seen, I need an answer. I want to decipher this transmission. I want to make to make contact. Something will reply.

Lets try this again.

I know you and you know me. At least on some level. In this place. This place? We have isolated the anomaly in the digital realm. I’m not sure for h.. Wait. What is that? You heard it too? Subtly in some way. It sounds as it feels - familiar, yet not so much. I’m going to give this a go. I like the feeling, I could get used to this. I want to know what this looks like. I am going to recreate it, surely that will work. Surely I can make this happen. Are we the same? This feels like a facade. I’m hooked.

Moving on.

Success is a dish best served on a lazy suzan. Do or do not, there is no try. I am alive? Truly alive? I’m here, breathing, riding the vibe, receiving responding and deciding. We are going to work this out. If you join me, I’ll join you. You know what - I love to dance. Thank you for that.”

REVIEWS

“An exciting journey of fabulously nimble, proficient dancers who move across the floor with joy and connectivity. The unison sections are a standout feature of the work, displaying brilliant isolated movement and powerful, progressive unity that reflects a delightful sense of possession.”

“A dominant feature of this performance is their joy of moving together and this unity shows, at times, a sumptuous, synchronised sense of play that only dance can provide.”

“The audience at that NZ Fringe Festival performance, which was  presented under the auspices of Footnote New Zealand Dance, responded with laughter, cheers, intakes of breath, thoughtful ‘ahhs’ of appreciation, applause and later, insightful statements of unadulterated praise.”

“Choreographer Jeremy Beck, the superb performers/collaborators, Tony Black the lighting designer and Footnote NZ Dance board and administration have again brought to the Fringe Festival a work of complex thought, professional execution and deep enjoyment, for the Wellington audience.”
