SOMEWHAT PHYSICAL
"Somewhat Physical" is a dance work choreographed by Jeremy Beck, presented as part of the New Zealand School of Dance's 2021 Graduation Season. It's described as a piece with comic satire but a serious undercurrent, questioning conventional relationships between music and movement. The performance features a large group of dancers and incorporates music by Rossini, Vivaldi, Purcell, and Mozart.
“I was following the Olympics and it made me wonder.. I thought about it some more - and here we are. An ode to the relentless pursuit of artistic excellence, integrity and love of dance.“
REVIEWS
“Equally choreographically assured and yet contrastingly bombastic is the final work of the second section; Jeremy Beck’s Somewhat Physical. Set to a magnificent and evocative score (Rossini, Vivaldi, Purcell, Mozart), Beck’s vision is bold, athletic, determined, vital.”
Brigitte Knight / Danz 2021
“Somewhat Physical by Jeremy Beck rocks with comic satire, but has a serious underpinning.”
“Rossini, Vivaldi, Purcell and Mozart would have loved it—well, it’s for sure at least Mozart would have.”
Jennifer Shennan / November 2021
“There is an excitement, pent-up jubilation, invention and delicious corporeality in Beck’s choreography. The performers are fierce here.”
Lyne Pringle / Stuff 2021
